How often does mulch need replacing?
Once a year for most beds. It breaks down into the soil, which is the point — it's feeding the bed while it works. A top-up each spring keeps both the look and the weed suppression.
Will mulch stop weeds completely?
No, and anyone who says otherwise is selling. Fresh mulch suppresses weeds for a season. Seed still blows in and the layer still breaks down. Beds that stay clean get a few visits a year, which costs less than starting over.
How deep should it go?
Two to three inches. Thinner doesn't suppress anything; thicker starts holding water against roots and stems.
